Superintendent’s Summary for the November 12, 2024, School Board Meeting

The Gloucester County School Board meeting began with a moment of silence honoring the passing of Mr. Carlton Drew’s father-in- law.  It then proceeded with heartwarming moment as second-grader Dalton Chadwick from Petsworth Elementary led attendees in the Pledge of Allegiance.

We celebrated several outstanding students this month, starting with Mariah Linkous, our Senior of the Month. Mariah is a dedicated student who excels academically, assists in the front office, and holds a job. We are incredibly proud of her achievements.

We also recognized Cody Keck, a hardworking senior who holds a job and will graduate early. Cody has shown great academic success and plans to serve the Gloucester community as a School Resource Officer or Sheriff’s Deputy. His commitment to our community is inspiring, and we are grateful to have him as part of GCPS.

Hannah Broadwell was commended for her life-saving quick response in identifying the signs of a stroke. Her actions may have saved a life. We thank Ms. Nestor for fostering such valuable skills in our students, empowering them to respond with clarity and care in crucial moments.

Mr. Keith Nuttall, our Community Volunteer of the Month, was honored for his continued dedication to Petsworth Elementary. Since retiring, Mr. Nuttall has returned to volunteer, bringing his warm demeanor and genuine care to the students and staff. Petsworth Elementary is better for his presence.

This month’s Accent on Academics highlighted Petsworth Elementary’s House System, a program that promotes character, acts of kindness and service among students. This initiative, integral to Petsworth’s distinguished status, encourages a positive school culture and strong community values.

School Board Chair Mr. Troy M. Andersen, Vice Chair Ms. Leonne Arsenovic, Ms. Cindy Saulman, Ms. Deborah McDonough, and Ms. Kari Scruggs were recognized by the Virginia School Boards Association for their commitment to effective school board governance.  Dr. Vladu, thanked Mr. Andersen for his leadership over the last 12 years on the school board, four of which he served as Chairman of the School Board.

Mr. Brent Schmidt, President and CEO of WHRO Public Media, presented a range of educational resources, including online SOL courses and professional development opportunities for teachers, demonstrating our commitment to enhancing learning through quality resources.

Dr. Diron Ford returned to provide an update on college readiness in GCPS. Since last year, Dual Enrollment and college credit course participation at Gloucester High School has more than doubled, thanks to partnerships with Rappahannock Community College and GHS staff. This growth saves parents money and prepares our students for future college success. Additionally, enrollment in advanced middle school math classes has shown to increase since last year.

Deputy Superintendent Mr. Hartley provided an update on the Capital Improvement Plan, which focuses on replacing outdated HVAC infrastructure and making critical investments to support the needs of Gloucester’s children. This commitment to enhancing our facilities underscores our dedication to creating safe and comfortable learning environments.

We are proud to announce that Gloucester County Public Schools has been named a Purple Star School District, one of only six out of 132 districts in Virginia to receive this honor. This designation reflects our dedication to supporting military students and their families, affirming our commitment to inclusion and support within our schools.

Lastly, Dr. Vladu thanked the 34 veterans who after their selfless service to our country, returned or settled in Gloucester to serve in this school community.  The power of their example and how they live their lives is a lesson to us all.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to this evening’s meeting.
