Subject: School Board Meeting Highlights
The School Board recognized Carol Dehoux, Executive Associate and School Board Clerk, for 31 years of meritorious service in public education. Thank you Carol, for guiding three superintendents and dozens of board members in their support of public education.
The meeting began on a positive note with Lily Armstrong, a 3rd grader from Abingdon Elementary School, who brightened up the room by leading the Pledge of Allegiance.
We proudly recognized Haylee Hartleben, a senior at Gloucester High School, as the Senior of the Month. Haylee embodies the best in all of us with her passion for life, positive attitude, and inspiring future plans. We are confident she will achieve beyond all expectations.
Congratulations to Shelly Armstrong, recognized as the Volunteer of the Month. Thank you, Shelly, for modeling effective school-parent relationships that prioritize student well-being and learning!
As part of the Accent on Academics presentation, Ms. Quigley and Mr. Dewitt from Abingdon Elementary School demonstrated a 1st Grade Math lesson. Their teaching craft is phenomenal, which explains why math is a favorite subject among their students.
We celebrated outstanding news: GCPS has achieved its highest level of performance since 2006! An external report ranks GCPS 22nd out of Virginia's 132 school districts in SOL performance. Furthermore, among the Region’s 17 school districts, GCPS ranks 2nd in Math, Science, and History and 3rd overall in Reading.
The Board approved the superintendent’s recommended resolution to declare the Transportation Facility a Gun-Free Zone. This follows last month’s resolution declaring the T.C. Walker Educational Facility a Gun-Free Zone.
