Dear GCPS teachers, parents, and staff
I hope this message finds you well. Unfortunately, I am reaching out with some troubling news regarding an incident of vandalism over the weekend at Abingdon Elementary School and the restroom building at Abingdon Park.
It has come to our attention that both buildings were defaced with racial slurs, vulgar language, and lewd images. We understand the seriousness of this situation and want to assure you that the Gloucester County Sheriff's Office (GCSO) is actively leading a criminal investigation into the matter. Once the GCSO cleared the scene, the school division immediately cleaned the affected property.
In light of these events, our schools remain vigilant and periodically check school properties each day. If you encounter any graffiti or inappropriate language or observe concerning behaviors, please do not hesitate to report them to the office.
As parents and guardians, you entrust us with the safety and well-being of your children, and we take this responsibility very seriously. At GCPS, we are deeply committed to fostering an inclusive environment where all students feel safe, respected, and valued. Acts of hate and intolerance have no place in our community, and we will not tolerate such behavior. We stand firm in our dedication to a work and learning environment that is welcoming to all. As such, we will continue to work tirelessly to create a welcoming and supportive environment for everyone.
Thank you for your cooperation and support as we navigate this challenging time together. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact us.
Sincerely,
Dr. Anthony Vladu
Gloucester County Public Schools Superintendent
