Virginia Literacy Act: Public Feedback Requested
The Virginia Literacy Act (VLA) was passed by the Virginia General Assembly in 2022 and focuses on improving literacy outcomes for all students in Virginia. The VLA requires each local school board to provide a program of literacy instruction aligned with science-based reading research and evidenced-based literacy instruction to students in grades K-8. To support school divisions with meeting this requirement, the VLA requires the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) to recommend instructional programs (core, supplemental, and intervention materials) for approval by the Virginia Board of Education (VBOE).
Core instructional programs that have been submitted by the VDOE for state Board approval are available for the public to review using the link below:
Gloucester invites its families and staff to review these materials submitted to the VDOE and to offer written feedback to [email protected] through June 14, 2023. For more information about the Virginia Literacy Act, we also invite families to read the "VLA One-Page" document and contact Jennifer Worrell (GCPS K-5 Literacy Specialist) at [email protected] with any questions.
